Johnny Cade is one of the seven main characters of The Outsiders. A shy, slight boy of sixteen who comes from an abusive home, He is considered the pet of the gang. Johnny's murder of the Soc, Bob Sheldon, and his own eventual death both serve as critical turning points for the plot of the story.

Johnny has been compared to a "little dark puppy that has been kicked too many times and is lost in a crowd of strangers. He was the youngest, next to [Ponyboy], smaller than the rest, with a slight build. He had big black eyes in a dark tanned face; his hair was jet-black and heavily greased and combed to the side, but it was so long that it fell in shaggy bangs across his forehead. He had a nervous, suspicious look in his eyes."

Johnny is referred to the gang's pet, as the Greasers are his main family because of his lack of care in his home. Johnny is usually very reserved and keeps to himself. In school Ponyboy has stated that he has failed many years and people think of Johnny as dumb. Despite this, Johnny proves to be an intelligent. He is able to find the meaning of the poem ''Nothing Gold Can Stay'' and is very philosophical. He also does seem to enjoy reading as he begged for a copy of ''Gone With the Wind'' in his hospital bed, and enjoys the book when Pony reads it to him.

Johnny is considered a hero, he put his life on the line to save the children in the church fire, however the injuries of the fire later made Johnny pay for his life.45
