Steve Randle is one of the six main characters of The Outsiders. Steve, at seventeen, is cocky, smart, and mechanically inclined, with a vast knowledge of automobiles. He has been the best friend of Sodapop Curtis since grade school and works along side him, part-time, at the DX gas station, and he has a talent for stealing hubcaps.
It is noted that he does not often get along with Ponyboy and sees him as Soda's annoying, know-it-all, tag along kid brother. Unlike Soda, Steve still goes to high school, and he lives with an alcoholic and sometimes abusive father. He will commonly stay at the Curtis' house after his father drunkenly kicks him out. It isn't unusual for him to let himself in in the middle of the night and sleep on their couch.
He is tough and once held off four opponents in a fight with a broken soda bottle. Steve is daiting a greaser girl named Evie.
